Confessions of a Game Store Customer

It’s time for me to come clean to all of you Game Store clerks out there, I’ve been holding this in for a really long time and I need to get it off my chest. Hopefully this doesn’t violate the non-disclosure agreement that I and the other 20 million Game Store customers signed, otherwise I could lose my license.

Look, it’s not that we hate you or the establishment that you’re a tool of. It’s just that, well how can I say this… you’re acting kind of obnoxious. All retail sucks, ask anyone who’s ever worked at a record store, a video rental store, or an American Eagle. They’ll fill your ears and your hearts with tales of customers yelling about nonsense, district managers imposing strict new sales policies and monotonous half-hearted rituals they must complete during each and every sale.

I know that video games are the most important thing on the planet, and by working for EBGameStopCrazy you’re playing a key role in keeping the earth from shifting off it’s axis, but seriously. The truth is, most of us think you guys (and gals) are kind coming off like dicks. I realize that working around video games all day means you are 1 credit short of a PhD in game development, but that doesn’t mean you have to rub it in all the time. We’re just there to buy some games, ya know? It would be nice to do so without being scrutinized by some pretentious 19 year old in a red and black Star Trek polo (you do know we laugh at those when we walk out of the store right?)

While we’re getting things out in the open, can I get through your store one friggin’ time without hearing a lengthy diatribe about your level 63 Warlock’s talent spec and it’s role in the raid guild? Please? For the love of God.

No, we don’t want to pre-order Halo 3, GTA4 or Metal Gear 4. I’m pretty confident Best Buy will have a small munitions depot worth of them the day they come out. I really don’t want the strategy guide for Elite Beat Agents either thanks, I think I’ll manage. Thanks for the $3 you gave me for that G.R.A.W. trade-in, I look forward to putting it towards the tax for G.R.A.W. 2.

So come on, stop taking your job so seriously. We all know it sucks, we don’t need to hear the ins and outs of your 5 hour shift. No one out here is harboring any illusions about the company you work for, it’s pretty clear they’re out to make money and that’s pretty much it. Last time I checked, thats what the other 64 stores in the mall are trying to do as well.

Oh, and don’t forget to tighten up those graphics in level 3 on your way out.

So how are they any different or more “assholeish” than the people that work at all the other stores in the mall? I think about it this way, no matter how bitchy they get, I get the final laugh because, guess what, they’re working at a mall making minimum wage.

Well, the point of my parody is that there’s been a rash of “Confessions of a GameStop Clerk” articles breaking out on the internet lately. I was just poking fun at them for acting like there’s some great mystery to be revealed from the dark underbelly of GameStop’s corporate policy.

fine, they are just AS asshole-ish or MORE so than any other retail clerk.

Oh, I didn’t know this was a parody. Yeah, who ever wrote that is probably a big tool.

Yeah I’m reading the comments on Joystiq and I’m getting the feeling it came off more as a complaint than simply goofing on the self-importance of these silly “EB Games Tru-Life” articles that seem to pop up every other day.

I rarely even shop in these stores anymore and buy most of my games at Best Buy or Target.

hah you guys gotta check out some of the comments over at digg.com. alot of people get the article and some actually even understand its SATIRE, but a majority of them are complete idiots and are missing the entire point of sol’s article. pretty funny stuff.

Reading the digg comments has taught me a few important things:

1. 95% of the people don’t read the article before commenting, most of the people that call me an asshole then go on to justify the very point I’m making up there.

2. Parody articles need a “This is a Parody” disclaimer.

3. There are a lot of people out there on the internet with huge sticks up their asses.

Seriously, how can you not tell this is a joke? I’ve worked plenty of retail jobs in my life and I’ve dealt with the same issues that these GameStop employee “tell alls” have been griping about. I worked at a Sam Goodies, I worked for 2 national video rental chains and I briefly worked at an Old Navy. I’m not ripping on people who make minimum wage, I’m ripping on the idea that the entire internet needs to hear about it, like it’s a goddamn Barbara Walters special.

Look, the main point of what I wrote up there is lighten up, enjoy working in a video game store while it lasts because shit gets a lot more hectic when you’re actually responsible for something at your job. The customers may be stupid sometimes, but you’re not perfect either… and someday you’ll be a stupid customer too. That’s just how it is.

To those of you that enjoyed this and got a laugh out of it, thanks for the diggs, you made my Friday morning. I don’t write for a living, this is just for fun, so I apologize for spelling ‘lose’ wrong in the digg blurb, if I could edit it I would.

Honestly if someone stopped reading it because I misspelled ‘lose’, I don’t want them reading it anyway.

Great article - quite a few truisms in there even though it’s a parody. I enjoyed it and I truly hate my job ;p If I come off like I’m a bitch it’s only because I don’t want to be there, I’m antisocial and misanthropic. I need a new job away from people :D Thanks for the laughs!

hey gamestore girl, thanks for the feedback. its true. its not just video game stores that blow, but retail in general. i think of the biggest problems with video game store clerks is that they really dont get commission for upselling stuff like guides and batteries. its a corporate decesion that of course makes the works disgrunteled.

i checked out your site. pretty funny stuff over there. keep it up. anywho, hope you stick around the ol’ shamoozal some!
