- In the upcoming issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter there is a huge
story on the death of the Benoit family with some revealing information.
Investigators found bruises on the neck and arm of seven year old Daniel and
couldn't figure out what was used to cause that kind of bruising.
Authorities realized what was done after they saw a tape of Benoit applying
the 'Crossface' during one of his matches and eventually it was ruled that
he used a variation of the move on his son to kill him. While police said it
was a choke hold during media appearances, they didn't want to make it sound
worse releasing the information how the kid got murdered. Another
interesting point is that recently Chris Benoit made a life insurance and
included his ex wife and two kids from that marriage as the beneficiaries,
leaving out Nancy and Daniel. The general theory why the murders happened is
that Nancy was going to inform him that she was leaving with their son and
that's when Chris went crazy. It is believed that he killed his son because
he thought he would never live a good life considering his medical
conditions without his parents.

Wow.... he killed his own kid with the Crossface.

The pro wrestler who strangled his wife and son and committed suicide last month bought injectable steroids excessively, according to court papers released Monday. His doctor was charged with improperly prescribing drugs to other patients.

Dr. Phil Astin prescribed a 10-month supply of anabolic steroids to Chris Benoit every three to four weeks between May 2006 and May 2007, a Drug Enforcement Administration agent said in an affidavit filed Friday and made public Monday.

During a probe of "RX Weight Loss," Benoit was identified as an excessive buyer of injectable steroids, the document states. Prosecutors would not say what "RX Weight Loss" is.

The affidavit also said Astin supplied various controlled substances, including injectable anabolic steroids, that were found in Benoit's home.

Astin has not been charged with supplying steroids to Benoit, though U.S. Attorney David E. Nahmias said more charges are possible.

Kris Sperry, Chief medical examiner of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, revealed in a press conference Tuesday that Chris Benoit tested for elevated levels of testosterone.

An analysis of the urine revealed Benoit had 207 mcg/liter of testosterone, with a testosterone:epitestosterone ratio of 59:1. The data suggests that he had been taking some testosterone for a period shortly before his double murder-suicide, although no other steroids were found in his urine.

Kris Sperry noted that while the data does reveal he was taking testosterone, it is impossible to know why he was taking it. Sperry added that there is no conclusive evidence that steroids could have greatly affected his mental state and driven him to commit the murders and suicide.

Benoit's body also revealed hydrocodone and Xanax use.

Nancy Benoit, like Chris, tested for hydrocodone (along with breakdown product hydromorphone) and Xanax. Her blood alcohol content was .184, although Sperry was quick to note that that level could entirely be caused by the decomposition process.

Sperry said that the hydrocodone and Xanax test levels were in a therapeutic range.

Son Daniel Benoit tested positive for Xanax. Authorities believe he was sedated with the drug prior to his murder.

A lawyer for Chris Benoit’s personal doctor suggested in court papers the former pro wrestler had a hormone disorder that permitted the amount of steroids he was prescribed before killing his wife, son and himself in June.

In a motion to suppress evidence filed Monday, Dr. Phil Astin’s attorney, Manny Arora, said a federal agent failed to tell a judge who issued search warrants in the case about the legitimate uses of steroids.

Arora wrote that if the government had consulted a hormone disorder specialist, it would have learned that “the amount of medication in question was not excessive and would be medically appropriate based on the medical condition of Mr. Benoit.”

The court filing did not elaborate on Benoit's condition. A spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office declined to comment.

Authorities have said Astin prescribed a 10-month supply of anabolic steroids to Benoit every three to four weeks between May 2006 and May 2007.

Anabolic steroids were found in Benoit's home, and tests showed Benoit had roughly 10 times the normal level of testosterone in his system when he died. Investigators have not given a motive for the killings, but the question of whether steroids played a role has lingered.

Testosterone can be used as part of hormone replacement therapy. Some athletes also have been known to use steroids to enhance their performance.

Astin has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of improperly prescribing painkillers and other drugs to two patients other than Benoit. Federal prosecutors plan a superseding indictment with new charges, but haven't said when they will act.

The district attorney overseeing the death investigation has said Benoit strangled his wife with a cord, used a choke hold to strangle his 7-year-old son, then placed Bibles next to the bodies and hanged himself on a piece of exercise equipment in his Fayetteville home the weekend of June 22.

Astin is free on bail, but must remain in his home except under limited circumstances. A pretrial conference is scheduled for Sept. 18.

I read a story today saying they did an autoposy on Benoit and checked out his brain a lot. He had a lot of brain damage from concussions over the years. They say his brain looked like that of an elderly man going through Alzheimers. So I guess the moral of the story is.... if you do too many flying headbutts then you'll kill your family.

Given the popularity of pro wrestling and the trainwreck appeal, if you can call it that, of former WWE star Chris Benoit‘s 2007 murder-suicide, I suppose it was just a matter of time before someone got the brilliant idea to adapt the horrifying tale into a big-screen feature. SRG Films is currently developing Crossface, a “biographical thriller” based on Matthew Randazzo V‘s book Ring of Hell: The Story of Chris Benoit and the Fall of the Pro Wrestling Industry. Ring of Hell tells Benoit’s story against the backdrop of the notoriously sleazy pro wrestling industry, demonstrating the mental, emotional, and physical toll the sport has on its participants in general and had on Benoit in particular. “All of us grow up believing that wrestling is fake, but looking at the shocking number of deaths in the industry, it quickly becomes evident that there is nothing fake about the dangers of this sport,” said SRG head Dale Alexander Carnegie (Clash of the Titans) in a press release.

The Canadian Benoit began his wrestling career in Canada and Japan in the mid-’80s before debuting in the WWE (then WWF) in 2000. In June 2007, over a three-day period, Benoit murdered his wife and 7-year-old son and then killed himself. The tragedy made headlines and shed light on the risks and unsavory practices of pro wrestling. Though the presence of anabolic steroids in Benoit’s home led many to wonder if “‘roid raid” might have caused Benoit’s actions, tests revealed that Benoit had also sustained serious brain damage due to repeated untreated concussions throughout his athletic career — to the extent that “it resembled the brain of an 85-year-old Alzheimer’s patient,” according to Julian Bailes of the Sports Legacy Institute.

First-time feature writer Sarah Coulter has already turned in the first draft of the script for Crossface. The company is now “in talks” with actors and directors about the project, which has a planned start date of fall 2012. “Chris Benoit has become a poster child for everything that’s wrong with professional wrestling and Sarah’s terrific script captures his struggles and the many factors that led to the deaths of three people,” said Carnegie. “The Benoit story is one that needs to be brought into the light.”

There’s definitely enough substance here for a feature-length film, but getting the tone right could prove supremely tricky. In the right hands, I suppose I can see how Crossface could wind up being a compelling, even important film. However, it’s also easy to imagine this becoming a tasteless attempt to cash in on a real-life tragedy. For the sake of the deceased parties’ friends and family, I dearly hope it’ll wind up being the former.
