Is this a bad idea? I brought some demos of mine to a friend to add drums, and he decided a slow intro progressing into a medium/fast paced song was impossible. I don't get his reasoning behind it, i'm sure tons of songs do it.

Tempo changes work really well in dance songs. It's good for buildups which create a rush when the beat finally drops back in. That can be achieved other ways too, but a tempo change is definitely a viable option.
