My wife and I are going to be getting a twin sized bed for our son in the coming months. He is currently sleeping in what used to be his crib that converts into a kid bed, but we have a baby on the way and its going to need to be called back into crib service again.

So I'm doing research and it seems a lot of people don't use a box spring? I mean, we're probably going to get a headboard and attach it to a frame that my mother in law doesn't need anymore. I always assumed you needed a box spring to keep the mattress from sagging through (unless you had a platform bed of course)?

I like box springs but we don't have one right now. Our bed is an Ikea one that doesn't support it.

No I had this big wooden base with drawers underneath and a place to keep books and my watch and glasses by my head.

I have one, but it's a smaller sized box spring due to the height of my bed. The mattress would have been way too high had I got a normal sized one. I brought measuring tape with me to the furniture store to make sure it would look right. I actually never slept on a bed that didn't have a boxspring so I don't if it's more comfortable or less comfortable. I do know that my bed is damn comfortable.....

I have a platform bed, so no Box Spring. But that's because I also have a memory foam mattress.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, BUY YOUR KID AND YOURSELF A MEMORY FOAM MATTRESS. I will never go back to an inner-spring mattress after having memory foam. It's like nigh-and-day. We didn't buy a really expensive one, but we did follow recommendations from friends and amazon reviews. I can tell you which brand it was, if you want.

A mattress absorbs the fluids that your body excretes (oil and sweat) as well as dead skin cells. The mattress becomes host to microscopic dust mites, which live in the dust and feed on the skin cells. These then perform their normal biologic functions, and their excrement adds its weight to the mattress as well. Idk if your kid has allergies, but because of the reasons above, memory foam is great for people with allergies. My wife has really bad allergies, and she says it's crazy how much better she sleeps now.

To give you an idea of how much shit ends up inside a mattress, in 10 or so years, a 90 pound inner-spring mattress can gain around 20 pounds. (source: Dirty Jobs)

I'd advise against an Ikea bed if you want it last him until he's out of the house. Those mattresses turn into weird shapes after a while. The frame should be fine though.

I bought a new box spring last year and it made my bed feel like new.
Of course over the years my 300lb ass completely flattened the springs in the old one so it was a pretty huge difference.

I kind of want to buy a new mattress because mine's pretty old. But I really don't want to buy any expensive things for the house until I have a chick move in with me, because I'm sure she'll tell me it's wrong anyway.

eh, cant go wrong with a matress. worst case, it goes into a guest bedroom. which is the room you give them free reign over.

Yeah if you go with an Ikea bed head out to a Mattress store and get one from them. We have an Ikea bed for us and for Lily, but we bought the mattresses @ Mattress Giant. Well worth it.

I'll tell you one thing, mattresses are expensive! I thought we got a nice Sterns and Fosters one for $800 (this was just the mattress, no box spring). But in comparison, looks like we got a pretty cheapo one because they go up to $5000. The one we got feels really nice still. I can't imagine how much better a $5000 mattress would be. They keep telling you that it's the one piece of furnature in the house that you use the most. But I still can't see myself spending that much money on a stupid mattress.

Aren't you supposed to change your mattress every 10 years? That's like a life time warrenty.
