When I look at other collections, like MGSHD, there is a drastic difference. RE4HD is just the PS2 version of the game displayed at a higher resolution. The textures haven't been upgraded and the sound has been compressed even further, making it muddier than the original. It's really nothing to get bent out of shape about, but it's disappointing after some of the amazing upgrades we've gotten. The game deserves better and you know it.
I know I'm not the only one who thinks this.
I agree with this. It's one thing to just literally port the game over and run it through the 'ol "HD filter" but its another thing to actually spend the time tuning it to the system and making worthwhile tweaks and additions. If you want RE4 on your PS3 at all times for a fair price, then yes, by all means get it. RE4 is still awesome and the only version that sucks is the iOS one. But I'd put something like the Wii version ahead of the PS3 port. It lacks HD graphics, but it more than makes up for it with GREAT motion control. Pointer aiming is fucking awesome, and it was extremely hard going from that to the standard stick aiming in RE5. And as much as people hate motion control, mapping something as simple as the knife to a swing is such a nice addition. I went from rarely using the knife in RE4 to using it a lot to get out of tricky situations only because it was so easy to use. And reloading with a flick felt great and responsive too. I'm sure RE5 Gold which uses Move probably feels just as nice as RE4 Wii.
Anyway I'm listing these features because it makes RE4 Wii more than just a port. There are actually changes in there that benefit the game itself. That is the sort of thing that separates a good port from a bad port.
Also, another example of a good port vs a bad port. Look at any Backbone port of a Genesis game on PS3/360. That stuff is garbage compared to the original Genesis stuff, and the work that M2 did on the Virtual Console ones. M2 has just starting doing port work of Gen games for 360 and PS3 and from what I hear they're great. And those are REALLY REALLY minor things, like muted colors, low audio, fuzzy sprites, edited title screens, slow down in areas there shouldn't be etc. They're just bad ports that are cash grabs.
